51: 2011 Passager Poetry Contest

In Winnetka, Illinois, where my mother took my little sister and me to her

parents to spend the summer. That’s where my interior life began. Each
evening we watched fireflies and listened to my grandmother read poetry
aloud: Wordsworth, Sir Walter Scott, the Brownings. It was the only time
she sounded happy. Sometimes I would pick a poem and memorize it so I
could recite it the next evening. The music of English poetry was planted
deep in my mind.
